Google's 2026 Pixel lineup brings smarter AI, smaller batteries, and a long-awaited notification ring
The Pixel 11, Watch 5, and new Pixel Tag tracker arrive with design tweaks, Gemini integration, and brighter displays—but battery capacity takes an odd step backward.

Google has announced its Pixel hardware for 2026, continuing an evolutionary path that stays true to the design language established in previous years. The new Pixel 11 phones, refreshed Pixel Watch 5, and Google's first home-grown tracker—the Pixel Tag—are available for preorder today, shipping August 20.
HiLight: A Modern Take on Notification LEDs#
The Pixel 11 Pro models reintroduce a concept that disappeared years ago: a visible notification indicator. Called HiLight, it sits as a ring of RGB LEDs embedded in the flash assembly on the back of the phone. When activated by voice commands to Gemini, the light glows to show the AI is listening and processing—an especially useful feature when the phone lies face down.
The capability extends to incoming calls from favorite contacts, working with standard phone calls and WhatsApp voice calls. However, functionality remains limited: there's no support for notifications from other apps or even text messages in Google Messages. This represents a significant step back from older notification LEDs that offered granular customization across all apps.
Camera and Display Improvements#
Google made several refinements to the camera system and screen technology. The distinctive camera bar has become less obtrusive on the base Pixel 11, now rising just millimeters above the back panel. The company also replaced the metal inlay with edge-to-edge glass, eliminating the embedded thermometer in the process.
Screen brightness increased across the board: the standard model stays at 3,000 nits, while Pro versions climbed to 3,600 nits. A new glass variant offers twice the scratch resistance compared to previous generations. The camera sensor on standard and Pro Fold models is the same 48 MP resolution but with a larger physical size to capture more light, plus expanded digital zoom reaching 30x on the base phone and 120x on Pro versions.
The Battery Puzzle#
One counterintuitive move: Google reduced battery capacity across the lineup despite longstanding complaints about middling battery endurance. The three flat phones lost under 100 mAh each, and the Pro Fold dropped 200 mAh to reach 4,806 mAh. Despite these cuts, Google maintains claims of "24+ hours" total battery life, attributed to the new Tensor G6 chip using 20 percent less power while delivering 25 percent faster browsing and 15 percent quicker app loading.
A new "Extreme Charging Mode" compensates by maintaining higher wattage longer during charging, with the processor throttling to manage heat generation.
