OpenAI's longtime COO Brad Lightcap departs to launch new venture
The executive architect of OpenAI's operations and business infrastructure is stepping down amid a broader shake-up of the company's leadership ahead of its planned IPO.

Brad Lightcap, who spent nearly a decade building OpenAI's operational and business foundations, is leaving the AI company to pursue a new project. The longtime executive announced his departure in an internal message shared publicly on Tuesday, saying it was "bittersweet" to move on but that he planned to "start something new."
A rising career at OpenAI#
Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018 and quickly became central to its financial and operational growth. He served as chief financial officer for four years before being promoted to chief operating officer in 2022, a role he held until earlier this year. His fingerprints are on much of the company's modern infrastructure — he helped establish or expand teams across finance, legal, human resources, corporate security, go-to-market strategy, and partnerships.
Before OpenAI, Lightcap worked alongside current CEO Sam Altman at the venture capital firm Y Combinator, giving him a long-standing relationship with the company's leadership.
Next steps remain vague#
In his departure announcement, Lightcap hinted at his future plans without revealing specifics. He suggested the world will need to address "a few important new things" in the coming period and promised to share more details later. He also signaled that he intends to support OpenAI's mission "from a different vantage point," implying potential ongoing involvement or investment in the company's success.
Timing reflects broader leadership upheaval#
Lightcap's exit is part of a larger executive reshuffle at OpenAI. In July, Fidji Simo, the company's No. 2 executive who led AGI development, announced her departure. Earlier departures have also included Bill Peebles, who previously headed the now-discontinued Sora video generator, and Kevin Weil, vice president of the company's Science division.
The changes come as OpenAI prepares for a major IPO expected to reshape the AI industry. The company has been recalibrating its leadership structure and focusing resources on core priorities.
