Google Home devices now accessible to third-party AI agents via new protocol
Google is rolling out early access to a Model Context Protocol server that lets any compatible AI agent—including Claude and ChatGPT—manage smart home devices and access activity history.
TechCrunch — AI
Google has begun offering early access to a new integration that bridges its smart home platform with third-party AI agents, letting those systems control connected devices through natural language commands.
The rollout centers on the company's Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for Google Home, which enables agents like Claude, ChatGPT, Hermes, and others to securely interact with smart home hardware and retrieve event logs. This move positions AI agents as a central control point for everyday home automation tasks.
What users can now do#
Once set up, people can instruct their chosen AI agent to:
- Review camera summaries and video clips
- Monitor activity across their smart home setup
- Control devices like lights, thermostats, and locks
- Build personalized dashboards tailored to their preferences
The integration covers the entire Google Home ecosystem, including Nest products and third-party devices certified under Matter or Google's "Works with Google Home" program.
Getting started#
Setting up the connection requires creating a Google Cloud project and configuring it for Home MCP, then sharing those credentials with an AI agent. The agent then guides users through sign-in and permission-granting steps. Google is providing setup documentation in its Home Developer Center.
Current rollout scope#
For now, the feature is available exclusively to U.S. subscribers of Google Home Premium Advanced, the $20-per-month tier offering extended video history, detailed alerts, and summaries. Google has not disclosed plans to expand access to lower-tier subscriptions or other regions, nor has it committed to a broader timeline.
The company is gathering feedback from early adopters through its Smart Home for Developers Community as it refines the feature.
Google's MCP strategy#
This marks an expansion of a strategy already underway across Google Cloud, Workspace, and other developer tools—integrating MCP to create smoother connections between platforms and AI systems. The home automation angle reflects a growing focus on bringing agent-based automation to consumer-facing products.
