Google Launches Colab CLI for Seamless Remote ML Training from Terminal
Google's new command-line interface bridges local development and remote Colab runtimes, enabling developers and AI agents to provision GPUs/TPUs and run ML pipelines without friction.

Google has unveiled the Colab Command-Line Interface, a tool designed to bring high-powered compute access directly into developers' terminal workflows and make it accessible to AI agents.
The CLI streamlines four key workflows:
- GPU/TPU provisioning: Request accelerators on-demand (e.g.,
colab --gpu A100orcolab --gpu T4) - Remote execution: Run local Python scripts and ML pipelines on Colab runtimes via
colab exec - Artifact recovery: Download models, datasets, and replayable notebook logs with
colab downloadandcolab log - Interactive sessions: Access remote environments interactively using
colab replorcolab console
Agent-Ready Architecture#
A key design goal is agent accessibility. The CLI includes a prepackaged skill file that gives AI assistants instant context on command usage, making it usable by agents like Antigravity, Claude Code, and others with terminal access.
Google demonstrated the capability with a real-world example: fine-tuning Google's Gemma 3 1B model on a Text-to-SQL dataset using QLoRA. An agent provisioned a T4 GPU, installed dependencies, executed a local training script remotely, logged the notebook, and downloaded the resulting model—all with five shell commands:
$ colab new --gpu T4
$ colab install transformers datasets peft trl bitsandbytes accelerate
$ colab exec -f finetune_run.py
$ colab log --output gemma_finetune_log.ipynb
$ colab stop
The tool eliminates manual cloud provisioning steps and lets developers offload compute-heavy workloads while maintaining local development workflows.
