New AI Framework Automates Use Case Flow Design for Software Projects
Researchers propose FlowGen, an LLM-powered system that generates complete use case flows while preserving system logic and boundaries—addressing a major bottleneck in software engineering.
Use case flows form a critical foundation for software engineering workflows, feeding into requirements analysis, system design, and test planning. Yet creating them by hand remains expensive and demands specialized expertise. Current automation tools often falter when it comes to maintaining logical consistency, control flows, data dependencies, and system scope—particularly when pinpointing branch points and mapping out alternative flows.
The FlowGen Approach#
A team of researchers has developed FlowGen, a system that leverages large language models (LLMs) to construct complete use case flows end-to-end. The framework combines three interconnected capabilities:
- Semantic Information Processing (SIP): Uses LLM reasoning to identify and extract meaningful elements from requirements
- Semantic Relational Graph (SRG): Builds a structured graph representation, encoded via an enhanced R-GAT model, to generate primary flows
- Branch Point Prediction (BPP): Detects decision points where flows diverge
- Alternative Flow Generation (AFGen): Synthesizes conditional branches based on predicted decision points
Validation and Results#
The team evaluated FlowGen across 20 datasets—13 from public repositories and 7 from industry settings. Performance gains were substantial:
- Primary flows improved 14% in precision, 7–25% in recall, 11–30% in F1 score, and 10–19% in area under curve
- Branch detection saw precision rise by 30–110% and F1 scores climb 32–117%
- Alternative flows showed 8–23% precision gains, 5–18% F1 improvements, and 0.6–2.5 point AUC increases
The authors also validated the effectiveness of the SIP module and tested how requirement detail levels and context scope influenced system performance.
Why It Matters#
Automating use case flow construction could significantly lower barriers to software project initiation and accelerate the journey from requirements to implementation. By reducing manual effort while maintaining semantic rigor, FlowGen bridges a persistent gap between requirements capture and downstream development activities.
