OpenAI fires back at Apple's trade secret theft allegations with pointed rebuttal
The AI company denies wrongdoing in a fresh clash between two rivals increasingly competing in consumer tech and hiring from each other's ranks.

OpenAI is pushing back hard against Apple's legal accusations, characterizing the iPhone maker's lawsuit as an unfounded assault. In a Monday blog post, the company flatly rejected claims that it misappropriated any proprietary information, saying Apple was making "vague accusations" without substance.
The core dispute#
Apple initiated legal action last month, contending that OpenAI obtained confidential hardware specifications while preparing its own consumer AI devices. The two tech giants have increasingly become rivals: OpenAI is pushing into consumer products, while Apple is working alongside Google to overhaul its Siri assistant.
OpenAI's defense#
The startup emphasized it has no interest in or possession of Apple's confidential designs. OpenAI took additional swipes at Apple's legal team, alleging that the company's lawyers contacted the wrong person after confusing names and falsely claimed to have spoken with OpenAI's legal leadership.
A relationship turned sour#
The companies previously collaborated on integrating AI capabilities into Apple's ecosystem. That partnership deteriorated after OpenAI acquired io—the design firm founded by legendary Apple design executive Sir Jony Ive—and subsequently brought on numerous former Apple staff members. Apple's lawsuit referenced more than 400 ex-Apple employees now working at OpenAI. The iPhone maker said it received no acknowledgment from OpenAI after sending a February warning about an internal investigation into potential trade secret theft.
Context and escalation#
This escalating conflict reflects deepening competition between the two firms as their business interests overlap more directly, combined with the talent migration occurring as OpenAI and other AI companies recruit experienced designers and engineers from Apple.
