Google launches lightweight image generator designed for high-speed, cost-effective content creation
The new Nano Banana 2 Lite model delivers images in just four seconds for a fraction of a cent each, positioning the tool as a quick-turnaround alternative for large-scale production workflows.
TechCrunch — AI
Google has unveiled Nano Banana 2 Lite, a streamlined version of its AI image and video creation system that emphasizes speed and affordability over visual sophistication. The model can generate images in as little as 4 seconds at a cost of $0.034 per 1,000 images, making it well-suited for teams that need to rapidly prototype and refine visual content.
Building on an expanding toolkit#
The latest release extends Google's growing suite of generative media products. Nano Banana 2, introduced earlier this year, brought improvements in realism and detail. The original Nano Banana launched the previous summer powered by Gemini 3.1 Flash. Beyond the new Lite variant, Google offers Nano Banana Pro for more demanding creative work—a trade-off between speed and capability. According to the company, the Lite model fills a specific niche: it's optimized for rapid, high-volume image production rather than polished, detailed outputs.
Wider AI media ecosystem#
Alongside the new model, Google expanded availability of Gemini Omni Flash, a multimodal tool capable of turning images, audio, and text into video. Priced at $0.10 per second of video output, the model addresses the content-creation pipeline from image to motion. The company also debuted Omni Product Studio, a demonstration application designed to convert static images into what it describes as "cinematic" promotional videos for e-commerce.
Growing industry pushback#
Despite heavy corporate investment in generative imagery tools, there remains significant cultural friction. Rising concern over AI-generated content flooding social platforms has prompted vocal criticism from creative industries. Google's recent $75 million partnership with filmmaker-friendly studio A24 drew particular backlash from fans and creators who view such collaborations as threats to human artistry. Nonetheless, major tech companies continue treating generative media as essential infrastructure for advertising, content production, and creative assistance workflows.
Nano Banana 2 Lite is accessible through Google AI Studio, the Gemini API, and Google's Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform.
