BMW's reinvented i3 sedan reaches 468 miles on a charge, starting at $62,850
The German carmaker has detailed its new all-electric sedan built on the Neue Klasse platform, revealing impressive range and a full suite of digital features for 2027.

BMW has finally released the specifics on its reimagined i3, the all-electric four-door sedan that replaces the earlier hatchback generation. The company confirmed pricing, powertrain details, and an ambitious driving range that challenge competitors in the midsize luxury EV segment.
Pricing and launch timeline#
The 2027 BMW i3 50 xDrive will carry a starting price of $61,500 plus a $1,350 destination charge, landing it squarely in competition with the Mercedes C-Class. The entry-level model arrives in the first quarter of 2027, marking the car's official US debut after months of anticipation.
Dual-motor setup delivers strong performance#
The i3 pairs two distinct electric motors for all-wheel drive. A rear-mounted electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) generates 322 horsepower and 321 lb-ft of torque, while a front asynchronous unit contributes 165 hp and 188 lb-ft. Together, they produce 463 total horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque. The EESM uses electromagnets rather than permanent magnets, with an inverter managing the conversion of battery power and optimizing efficiency in real time.
Range that stands out#
BMW estimates the i3 will deliver approximately 468 miles of EPA-rated range — a figure that outpaces earlier projections and positions it competitively against rivals like the upcoming 2027 Mercedes EQS. The vehicle relies on BMW's new Gen6 high-voltage battery, which uses cylindrical lithium-ion cells (46 mm diameter, 95 mm height) that provide a 20 percent energy density boost compared to earlier prismatic cells. BMW has declined to disclose the battery's exact capacity.
Advanced charging and vehicle-to-home integration#
The i3 supports bidirectional charging with vehicle-to-load and vehicle-to-home capabilities, allowing owners to draw power from the battery during outages or peak pricing periods. An intelligent charging door opens automatically when drivers approach familiar charging points, while Plug & Charge technology streamlines connections at 10 different networks.
