Instagram now labels AI profiles and throttles unregistered fake accounts
Meta is cracking down on synthetic influencer accounts that masquerade as real people, requiring AI-generated profiles to identify themselves or face reduced visibility.

Instagram is moving to curb a growing problem: AI-generated personas designed to look like actual humans but lacking any disclosure. The platform is taking two key steps—renaming its labeling system and actively suppressing non-compliant accounts.
The new label and enforcement approach#
The social platform plans to replace its existing "AI creator" designation with a clearer "AI-generated profile" tag to flag when a persona is synthetically created rather than representing a real person. More significantly, Instagram will hunt down accounts that fail to voluntarily adopt this label and penalize them by restricting their distribution: their content won't surface in the Reels and Explore feeds to users who don't already follow them.
Account holders who believe they've been incorrectly flagged will have the option to contest the classification.
Why the shift matters#
Feedback from Instagram's user base revealed a consistent frustration: discovering after engaging with a profile that the featured person doesn't actually exist. As the platform noted, "They want to know when a profile features an AI-generated person." The transparency gap has widened as AI-powered influencer accounts have become increasingly difficult to distinguish from genuine ones.
What's still not covered#
The policy contains a notable carve-out: creators using AI generation tools to produce individual pieces of content—rather than building entirely synthetic personas—won't be required to disclose. This means the initiative addresses impersonation rather than providing a blanket solution for filtering out AI-assisted content broadly. Observers have pushed Instagram and its competitors to go further in giving users control over what AI content they encounter.
