AWS commits $1 billion to embedded engineering teams for enterprise AI projects
The cloud provider is launching a forward deployed engineering program to station engineers directly with customers as they build and scale AI systems.
The New Stack
Amazon Web Services has announced a $1 billion investment in forward deployed engineering — a new organizational unit designed to embed AWS engineers directly within customer teams developing AI applications.
Rather than offering advisory services from the sidelines, these engineers will become integrated members of customer projects, working alongside developers, security teams, and business leaders to build, test, and deploy AI systems using the customer's own data, governance frameworks, and AWS infrastructure.
Why enterprise demand is driving the investment#
The initiative reflects growing customer requests for more direct engineering partnership as AI initiatives transition from pilots into production environments. Many organizations have already secured access to foundation models, but the real engineering challenge lies in integrating those models with existing systems, proprietary data sources, and corporate security policies. AWS positions its new team as the solution to that integration bottleneck.
How the embedded model works differently#
Forward deployed engineers become part of customer teams for the duration of projects rather than acting as external consultants. They leave behind production systems, documentation, and engineering practices that customer teams can maintain independently after the engagement concludes.
AWS has already deployed these teams with organizations including the Allen Institute, Cox Automotive, the NBA, the NFL, and Ricoh. In its NFL partnership, for instance, AWS engineers collaborated with league staff to develop NFL Fantasy AI and NFL IQ — applications that moved into production within weeks. The company claims this embedded approach can compress deployment timelines from months to days, though it hasn't detailed the methodology behind that estimate.
The technical architecture#
The FDE teams connect enterprise data sources into a governed knowledge graph — essentially a semantic layer built within each customer's AWS environment. This design keeps proprietary data subject to existing governance controls while making it accessible to the AI applications being developed. Engineers also leverage AI-assisted software development throughout these engagements, though they retain full responsibility for reviewing and validating any generated code.
