Google's Latest Android Update Brings Gemini Item Tracking and Accessibility Features
A new Android feature drop connects Gemini to Find Hub for storing item locations and rolls out Motion Assist dots alongside accessibility enhancements.
Ars Technica
Google has released a fresh Android feature drop with both AI-powered and practical upgrades across a broad range of devices. While previous drops relied heavily on Gemini expansions, this release balances artificial intelligence additions with genuinely useful tools for messaging and accessibility.
Item Tracking via Gemini#
On Android 16 and beyond, users can now instruct Gemini to remember where they've placed items that lack a physical tracker. The workflow is simple: tell the AI where something is located and optionally attach a photo. The system stores these details in Find Hub, which has traditionally served as the hub for locating phones, earbuds, and devices with tracker tags attached.
When you need to locate that forgotten item later, you can query Gemini or browse Find Hub directly to retrieve the stored information.
New Accessibility Tools#
Gemini Live introduces Guided Vision, a feature aimed at improving accessibility for users navigating the physical world. The tool leverages the device camera to help locate objects within the frame and can extract text that's difficult to read in low-light environments—such as menu items in a dimly lit restaurant.
The feature goes further than simple object detection: it can measure spatial relationships, telling users precisely how far their hand is from an object they're reaching for. Guided Vision integrates into the system Accessibility shortcuts menu and is accessible via the TalkBack menu, making it available on nearly all Android devices running Android 9 Pie or later.
Wider Device Support#
Unlike Pixel-specific drops, these features roll out across a broader Android ecosystem. The Motion Assist dots, which help reduce motion sickness, are now rolling out more widely after initially appearing in limited form last week.
