Roblox launches mobile AI game builder to democratize game creation
The platform is rolling out Build, a new AI-powered tool that lets players create games from text prompts directly on their phones, raising questions about content quality.
The Verge
Roblox is expanding its AI push by introducing Build, a mobile-first tool that transforms text descriptions into playable games without requiring coding knowledge. The feature represents a significant step toward lowering the barrier for casual creators on a platform already home to millions of user-generated experiences.
How Build works#
The new tool operates entirely within the Roblox mobile app, converting natural language prompts into complete games. It handles multiple layers of creation—gameplay mechanics, environments, characters, visual aesthetics, and audio—by combining Roblox's proprietary AI models with open-source alternatives. Users at least nine years old can create games in the alpha launch, though published titles will be restricted to players aged 16 and up.
Roblox's expanding AI toolkit#
This announcement extends a broader strategy the company has pursued over the past year. Roblox previously unveiled an AI world-building system akin to Google's Project Genie, launched an AI foundation model for generating 3D assets, and rolled out a developer assistant chatbot. The new Build feature makes these capabilities far more mainstream by eliminating the need for Studio, the platform's traditional development environment.
Addressing quality concerns#
The announcement inevitably raises concerns about content saturation. An AI tool this accessible could theoretically flood the platform with low-quality games. However, Roblox has built safeguards into its discovery algorithm: games rise through recommendations based on retention metrics, meaning titles with minimal player engagement simply won't surface in feeds or on the homepage. "Our discovery systems are designed to highlight games with long-term retention, which doesn't include AI slop," the company stated, emphasizing that algorithmic ranking will naturally filter out abandoned or unpopular creations.
Timeline and availability#
Build enters public alpha on exclusively in New Zealand, initially open to verified users aged nine and older. A free base-level version will be available to all, with premium options for advanced creators coming at an unspecified cost. Roblox plans to expand to additional regions over the coming months. The company is also developing new AI agents for both Build and Studio—including tools for playtesting, analytics, and engagement optimization—rolling out gradually through the year.
