Google's Androidbooks debut October 4 with premium builds starting at $899
Five new Android-powered laptops from Google partners challenge traditional computing, featuring OLED screens and on-device AI capabilities.
Ars Technica
Google is making another push into the laptop market with Googlebooks—a line of Android-powered devices designed to function as serious computing machines rather than budget alternatives. While the search giant has dominated smartphones, its track record with larger-form computers has been mixed, but the new lineup suggests a shift in strategy away from budget Chromebooks toward premium hardware.
What's launching#
The first batch of Googlebooks becomes available October 4, with five models now open for preorder from manufacturers experienced with Chromebook production. Most machines price well above the traditional budget category, though one model breaks under $900. The starting price point is $899.
Premium features across the board#
These laptops break sharply from the austere design language of typical Chromebooks. All models share several distinctive traits: vibrant OLED displays, aluminum chassis, expansive haptic trackpads, and an illuminated accent bar on the lid called the Glowbar. Currently, the Glowbar shows device status during boot and battery levels, but Google plans to open an API that will let developers unlock additional functionality.
Standard configurations include 16GB of memory, with 32GB options available on select models. Processing power comes from either Snapdragon X Elite or Intel Core Ultra Series 3 (Panther Lake) processors—both equipped with neural processing units rated for 45 TOPS of on-device AI work. The entire range uses fanless designs and delivers battery life estimates of up to 14 hours for video streaming and 16 hours for web use.
A different bet#
The shift from Chromebook economics reflects Google's apparent acceptance that Android laptops need to operate in a different market tier than their budget predecessors. Rather than attempting to compete head-to-head with macOS and Windows ecosystems on price, these machines emphasize local processing power, integrated development tools, and hardware craftsmanship.
