Instinct hits $10B valuation after raising $1B in Series C just weeks into fundraising sprint
The viral AI assistant startup secured funding from top-tier investors including Sequoia and Benchmark, raising its valuation fourfold in a single month.
TechCrunch — AI
AI assistant startup Instinct has raised $1 billion in a Series C round just weeks after its previous funding announcement, bringing its total valuation to $10 billion. The round included backing from Sequoia Capital, Benchmark Capital, and Coatue, marking an extraordinary acceleration in the company's growth trajectory.
The company had previously announced a $350 million raise at a $2.5 billion valuation in late August—meaning investor confidence has pushed valuations up fourfold in roughly a month's time.
The Appeal of Task-Performing AI#
Instinct belongs to an emerging category of consumer AI agents that go beyond answering questions or holding conversations. These systems can actually execute real-world tasks on behalf of users, handling everything from booking travel and restaurant reservations to managing purchases, paying bills, canceling subscriptions, conducting research, and ordering groceries.
The platform operates by using its own phone number and computer interface to complete these actions. Recently, Instinct rolled out additional features, including a "concierge" service that can make phone calls to businesses without online booking systems to schedule appointments, plus a "trusted person network" that allows different users' Instinct agents to coordinate with each other's agents.
Privacy Trade-offs and Competitive Pressure#
Operating such a capable system requires users to share substantial personal data with the AI agent. Instinct's initial privacy policy raised significant concerns about data exposure and overreach, though the company has since made updates to address those issues.
The startup is facing mounting competition from Meta's AI assistant, Muse, which provides comparable functionality with the added advantage of tight integration into Meta's ecosystem. Muse can perform many of Instinct's core tasks while also monitoring Instagram direct messages, summarizing Facebook Groups activity, and tracking Marketplace listings—capabilities that have propelled Muse to the top of U.S. app store charts with millions of downloads.
Notably, Instinct communicates through SMS and texting but has not yet launched a dedicated mobile app, while the startup has remained silent on its user growth figures.
Founder's Vision#
In a statement, founder Noah Shinn said: "We're building Instinct to be the best personal agent that can handle the deeply personal nuances of everyday life. This funding helps us bring Instinct to more people and continue building the future of personal AI."
