Marketing software startup Profound has crossed into unicorn territory, securing $180 million in Series D funding at a $1.8 billion valuation. The achievement is particularly notable given the company raised $96 million in its Series C round just under seven months prior.
Funding and backers#
Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins led the latest investment round, with earlier supporters returning to participate. Lightspeed Venture Partners, Khosla Ventures, and South Park Commons all contributed additional capital.
What Profound does#
The two-year-old startup began as an analytics tool but has evolved into a comprehensive platform for marketing strategy development. At its core, Profound helps organizations understand how AI systems—and the audiences relying on them—discover their brands and products online.
The company positions itself in the burgeoning generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) space, where vendors build tools to ensure brands surface favorably as consumers shift from traditional search engines to AI-powered discovery systems.
Momentum and scale#
Profound's expansion reflects strong market traction. The company reports a 3x revenue increase over the past six months and now serves more than 1,000 enterprise clients—a roster that includes major names like Comcast, The Estée Lauder Companies, and Walmart.
