Figma Brings Code, Animation, and AI Tools to Design Canvas
The design platform is adding code layers, motion support, and AI-powered custom plugins to strengthen designer-engineer collaboration.
TechCrunch — AI
Figma announced a significant update adding code layers, animation support, and expanded AI capabilities to its collaborative canvas—aiming to blur the line between design and development workflows.
New Code Integration#
The centerpiece is code layers, which let teams import repositories directly into Figma and extract code flows as design elements for rapid prototyping. According to chief product officer Yuhki Yamashita, the feature is designed for exploratory work rather than production-ready code: "This is an environment where you don't really care about the quality of the code."
Motion and Visual Effects#
Designers can now build animations, transitions, and 3D transforms natively in Figma—previously requiring roundtrip exports to external tools. The platform also added AI-generated shader effects and fills, integrating capabilities from Weavy, which Figma acquired last year.
Smarter AI Agents#
Figma's AI assistant gains new abilities: users can write prompts to create reusable skills, and the agent can now connect to external tools (Notion, GitHub, Excel, Granola) or ingest files for richer context. There's also a new prompt-based feature for generating custom plugins like layout generators or vector path tracers.
These capabilities build on Figma's earlier integrations with Claude Code and Codex and its own AI prototyping tool, Figma Make, all targeting tighter designer-engineer handoffs.
