Google Launches Pics: AI-Powered Design Tool for Workspace Teams
Google's new creative suite integrates generative AI directly into Workspace, letting teams create and edit professional images without leaving their documents.
The Verge
Google has unveiled Google Pics, a fresh suite of creative tools designed to streamline image creation and editing for Workspace users. The platform marries Gemini and the Nano Banana generative AI model to help teams produce polished visuals for marketing, presentations, and brand storytelling—aiming to sidestep the awkward, inconsistent results that often plague AI-generated business imagery.
What Google Pics Does#
The application offers granular control over AI-powered image work. Rather than relying solely on text prompts to generate whole images, users can target specific objects or text within an image and describe precisely what they want changed. The toolset includes image upscaling to 2K or 4K quality, smart cropping for different formats (web, social, print, digital), and the ability to regenerate or edit text within images, including translation capabilities.
Where It Lives#
Google Pics is rolling out as a standalone Workspace app and as an embedded feature within Google Docs and Slides. Users can select an image directly in their documents or presentations and tap into Pics' editing arsenal without switching applications. Drive integration is coming in the coming weeks. The platform also supports team collaboration—users can share designs with colleagues and collaborate on edits together.
The Competition Angle#
Canva and Adobe Express already offer similar image generation and editing capabilities. By embedding these creative tools directly into Workspace, Google appears intent on reducing the need for employees to juggle multiple subscriptions or jump between platforms for routine design tasks like posters, flyers, and social media graphics.
Rollout Timeline#
Following an initial testing phase after Google I/O in May, Google Pics is now becoming available to Workspace users across Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus plans. It's also accessible to subscribers of Google AI Pro and Ultra personal plans, plus the Google AI Pro for Education offering.
