Meta Eyes Camera-Free Smart Glasses as Privacy Backlash Intensifies
Amid mounting criticism over surveillance concerns, Meta is reportedly developing Luna, a smart glasses model stripped of cameras but equipped with AI integration.
TechCrunch — AI
Meta's foray into smart glasses has drawn significant public scrutiny. While the company's camera-equipped models have gained traction relative to competitors, privacy advocates have voiced alarm, viewing the devices as intrusive tools that enable surveillance at scale. In response to mounting backlash, Meta is developing a new alternative.
The Camera-Free Alternative#
According to The Information, Meta has created a smart glasses variant called Luna that removes integrated cameras entirely. Instead, the device focuses on voice-based interaction through six microphones, paired with Meta's AI assistant and Muse, the company's AI consumer agent. A side-mounted button triggers the AI system when pressed.
Timeline and Announcement#
Meta may debut Luna at Meta Connect, the company's developer conference scheduled for the following week, though no official confirmation has been made yet.
The Broader Market Landscape#
The smart glasses sector has expanded considerably in recent years, with Meta establishing itself as a major player. However, the industry continues to grapple with obstacles—including user adoption uncertainty, high costs, and persistent privacy concerns. Meta's Reality Labs division, which develops the company's AR and VR hardware, remains deeply unprofitable, with losses continuing to mount according to recent financial disclosures.
