Anthropic Launches Sonnet 5.5, Touting 30% Speed Gains and Lower Costs
The AI lab's latest mid-tier model prioritizes speed and efficiency for routine work—from coding to document creation.
TechCrunch — AI
Anthropic has unveiled Sonnet 5.5, a refreshed iteration of its mid-tier foundation model that trades raw power for practical speed and lower operational costs compared to its predecessor.
Key improvements#
The headline upgrades center on performance efficiency. Anthropic claims Sonnet 5.5 operates 30 percent faster than Sonnet 5 while consuming tokens at a significantly slower rate—making it cheaper to run at scale. The company positions it as a strong fit for everyday application work: coding, document generation, and agent-based tasks.
Agentic advantage#
Where Sonnet 5.5 breaks new ground is in multi-agent deployment. Anthropic's benchmarks show it outperforming the more capable Opus 5.5 on agentic coding challenges, likely because its efficiency lets developers spawn and coordinate multiple agent instances without hitting cost constraints. This positions Sonnet 5.5 as an attractive tool for organizations building agent-heavy workflows.
Security upgrades#
The model also gets fortified with enhanced security. Sonnet 5.5 now carries cyber safeguards previously limited to Fable and Opus, bringing it to parity with Opus 5 on protection capabilities. It's the first Sonnet model to receive this level of scrutiny.
The broader context#
Sonnet 5.5 arrives just three months after Sonnet 5's launch in June, underscoring the rapid release cadence across the industry. OpenAI and Meta have both pushed new models in recent weeks, each staking claims on different performance-vs.-cost tradeoffs. Anthropic also teased an updated Haiku (its smallest model) coming in the coming weeks, though a launch date remains unconfirmed.
