Instagram cracks down on AI profiles hiding their artificial nature
The platform is cracking down on accounts featuring AI-generated people that don't disclose the fact, rolling out a clearer label system and algorithmic penalties for deceptive accounts.

Instagram is tightening its approach to artificial intelligence-generated accounts. The social network introduced a revamped labeling system and will now suppress the distribution of profiles featuring synthetic people that fail to disclose their AI origins.
What's changing#
The platform is retiring the term "AI creator" in favor of a more transparent "AI-generated profile" designation, designed to clarify for users that the account represents a person or character produced through artificial intelligence technology.
Accounts that properly adopt the new label will face no algorithmic penalties. However, creators who omit the disclosure risk having their content's reach diminished across the platform.
The policy distinction is important: the label applies only when an entire profile depicts an AI-created person. Using AI tools to enhance individual photos, polish text, design graphics, or refine creative elements falls outside the scope of this requirement.
Why now?#
The move reflects escalating concern across the industry. Instagram acknowledged receiving feedback from users frustrated by discovering—after following or engaging with accounts—that the purported person behind them never existed.
"As generative AI becomes a bigger part of how people create, we've heard that people don't like seeing a profile that seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated," the company stated.
Growing AI influencer problem#
Public skepticism about synthetic influencers has intensified as AI-generated personalities proliferate. Investigations have uncovered networks of deceptive accounts across social platforms: Wired exposed dozens of AI influencers promoting a gay dating app through coordinated outreach, while The New York Times documented hundreds of synthetic wellness figures hawking health supplements with unfounded medical claims.
Broader context#
This announcement arrives amid ongoing scrutiny of Meta's AI practices. Earlier this year, the company withdrew an image-generation tool after backlash over its use of users' public content without explicit permission. Most recently, Meta agreed to an with U.S. states addressing child safety concerns, which includes introducing new usage restrictions for teen users.
