Apple uses AI and 3D printing to engineer durable hinge for new Duo foldable
The tech giant is taking an algorithmic approach to manufacturing precision, custom-coating its first foldable with special finishes designed to withstand repeated folding.

Apple has finally launched its entry into the foldable phone market with the Duo, equipping it with a hinge assembly built using artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing techniques in a bid to overcome durability challenges that have plagued rival devices.
The durability challenge#
The foldable phone category has attracted strong consumer interest, yet many devices in this space have struggled with form factor limitations and longevity issues. Because foldables inherently endure twice the mechanical stress of traditional handsets, they typically show significant wear over time compared to conventional smartphones. The hinge mechanism—the pivotal joint where the screen flexes—has been a particularly vulnerable point for many competing designs.
Precision manufacturing through AI#
To address these concerns, Apple has embedded machine learning into the production process. According to Johny Srouji, Apple's chief hardware officer, the company deploys AI algorithms during assembly to match each individual hinge component with the housing unit that provides the optimal fit, eliminating assembly variability. A confocal laser then maps the microscopic surface texture of every unit, after which a 3D printer deposits up to 25 layers of proprietary photopolymer coating to smooth out any residual surface imperfections.
Additional durability features#
Beyond the hinge system, the Duo incorporates several protective measures. The phone features a specialized nano-texture surface that substantially diminishes glare and light reflection, and Apple has implemented a sophisticated multi-layer lamination strategy intended to extend the device's structural lifespan. Srouji revealed these details during Apple's Surprise and Shine event this week.
The real-world test#
While Apple's engineering approach is rigorous, whether these innovations will prove sufficient to maintain the phone's condition over extended everyday use remains an open question that consumers and reviewers will ultimately answer.
