OpenAI Cuts Pro Plan Limits in Half, Introduces Premium $500 Tier
OpenAI is cutting usage allowances on its $200 Pro plan while rolling out a new $500-per-month option with faster token generation and significantly higher quotas.
The New Stack
OpenAI announced a pair of subscription changes this week: a new premium $500-per-month Pro tier and a significant scaling back of benefits on its existing $200 plan starting October 30.
The $500 plan will offer the company's highest usage ceiling and provide access to an Ultrafast tier that accelerates token generation for GPT-6 Astra to roughly 8 times the standard rate in Codex. An accelerated version for GPT-6.1 Sol is expected soon.
The reduction in existing coverage#
Subscribers on the $200 Pro plan will see their usage allowance cut dramatically. OpenAI is slashing what was a 20x multiplier of the base $20 Plus plan down to 10x—effectively halving the allocation. Weekly message limits for GPT-6 Pro within Chat will also drop from 200 to 100 per week.
Current subscribers retain their existing limits through October 29. After that date, they receive a one-time grant of 62,500 usage credits valued at $2,500, set to expire at year's end. The company is not reinstating a previous 5-hour weekly consumption window, meaning users can exhaust their credits on their own timeline.
The company's rationale and pushback#
Tibo Sottiaux, OpenAI's head of product and platform, framed the change ahead of the official announcement, arguing that cheaper, more capable models now available would enable developers to accomplish more work despite the reduced allowance compared to a month prior.
Developer reaction on social media skewed sharply negative, with critics suggesting they would switch to competing platforms like Claude. The criticism reflects a fundamental misalignment: users expect efficiency gains from AI advances to translate into broader access—not higher tiers and smaller quotas for existing plans.
The timing of OpenAI's advance notice suggests the company anticipated backlash, attempting to control the narrative before full details emerged. The precise usage boundaries of the $500 plan remain unspecified.
Industry standards at stake#
A 20x multiplier on premium subscriptions has long been the norm across major AI providers. Google's top-tier Gemini plan ($200/month) and Anthropic's comparable offering both maintain this ratio, though Google's includes additional storage and features.
Whether OpenAI's move signals a new market trend or triggers sufficient customer resistance to reverse the decision remains uncertain.
