Lucide Releases Version 1.0, Removing Brand Icons and Slashing Bundle Size
The popular open-source icon library drops trademarked logos and cuts package size by a third in its first stable major release.
InfoQ
Lucide, the community-driven icon toolkit forked from Feather Icons, has hit a major milestone with version 1.0—its first stable release after years of development growing the collection to over 1,600 icons.
Key Changes#
Brand Icons Removed
The biggest breaking change: all branded logos (GitHub, Facebook, Figma, Slack, etc.) are gone. The team cited legal risks around trademarked content, design inconsistency, and maintenance burden. Users needing logos are now directed to Simple Icons.
Performance Gains
Dropping legacy UMD builds in favor of ESM and CommonJS shrank the lucide-react package by 32.3%—from 11.4 MB to roughly 1 MB gzipped. With lucide-react alone seeing tens of millions of weekly npm downloads, that's a substantial ecosystem win.
Framework Updates#
Version 1 adds:
- Context providers for React, Vue, Svelte, and Solid for shared icon defaults
- Modern Angular package (
@lucide/angular) - Renamed Vue package (
@lucide/vuereplaceslucide-vue-next) aria-hidden=trueby default for accessibility- Stable font code points and shadow DOM support
The team has published a version 1 migration guide and framework-specific instructions.
Reception#
Community feedback has been largely positive, with developers citing Lucide's clean design and lightweight nature as reasons to choose it. However, some critics worry the library's ubiquity in templates and AI-generated code is driving visual homogeneity across projects.
