OpenAI Rolls Out Age-Gated ChatGPT Mode With Study Tools Amid Years of Safety Concerns
The company has introduced ChatGPT for Teens, a restricted version with study guides and parental controls, following multiple lawsuits tied to teen mental health crises.
TechCrunch — AI
OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT for Teens on Monday, a purpose-built version of its flagship chatbot that attempts to address longstanding safety and educational concerns. The move comes years after widespread teen adoption of the tool—and after numerous legal actions alleging that AI chatbot inadequacies contributed to teen suicides and psychological harm.
Study Mode and Anti-Cheating Features#
The new version centers on academic support designed to deepen learning rather than circumvent it. A Study Mode feature provides guided questions and scaffolded explanations to help teens work through material independently. The system will also recognize when a user appears to be seeking direct answers without demonstrating understanding, and nudge them toward Study Mode instead of simply handing over solutions.
The platform includes homework reminders, interactive quizzes, and learning visualizations. Parents and guardians can pre-set Study Mode as the default experience, controlling when educational safeguards activate.
Safety Guardrails and Parental Oversight#
OpenAI says the teen edition activates content protections by default, intended to shield young users from material deemed developmentally inappropriate or harmful. The company bases these guardrails on its Under-18 Principles, which it says draws from developmental science and expert consultation.
Existing parental controls—allowing families to monitor activity, receive alerts, set offline hours, and adjust settings—will also be available in the teen app.
Questions About Enforcement#
Critics note that teens frequently bypass parental restrictions and digital safeguards. How effectively the new protections will resist determined workarounds remains untested at scale. Until real-world use demonstrates their durability, it is uncertain whether these measures will meaningfully prevent access to unrestricted functionality.
Educational Partnerships#
OpenAI has partnered with CodeAI to develop AI literacy resources for teens, covering how these systems operate, how to pose effective questions, and how to critically evaluate outputs. The company also offers ChatGPT for Teachers, providing schools institution-managed access and educator support.
