OpenAI gives ChatGPT plugin extensions a richer interface and automation capabilities
Developers can now build app-like experiences inside ChatGPT with dedicated sidebars, interactive panels, and event-triggered automations.
TechCrunch — AI
OpenAI is broadening ChatGPT's reach beyond its own suite of productivity tools by letting third-party developers create deeper, more integrated experiences. The company unveiled a major expansion to its plugin ecosystem at its Dev Day event, moving beyond simple tool connectors toward full-featured applications that live natively within the ChatGPT interface.
Plugins get app-like treatment#
The company has historically offered plugins that hook ChatGPT into external services—Slack, SharePoint, Google Drive, and others. The new generation elevates this by giving plugins a persistent home in ChatGPT's sidebar and the ability to display interactive panels where users can navigate their tools without leaving the chat window. Developers can also embed custom file viewers tailored to their product's file formats, creating a more seamless experience.
Streamlined creation and discoverability#
OpenAI is investing in developer tooling and user experience on both sides. A new Plugin Creator tool simplifies the build process, while a refreshed submission flow to the plugin directory offers more transparent feedback. The company has also revamped how plugins are ranked and surfaced—both in the directory itself and when recommended mid-conversation. Users gain finer control, too: they can now grant or deny plugin permissions on an individual basis rather than all-or-nothing.
Automations and event-driven workflows#
Perhaps most significantly, OpenAI is adding support for the MCP Events specification, allowing plugins to trigger workflows based on events in connected applications. This shifts plugins from reactive tools to proactive agents that can run automations—a move that mirrors the broader industry trend toward AI-driven workflow orchestration.
Extended to ChatGPT Sites#
The company is also extending plugin support to ChatGPT Sites, its lightweight website builder. This means users can publish apps alongside their sites, enabling colleagues to use those tools with their own data and access credentials.
