Stability AI Secures $76M From Music Giants and EA in Latest Round
The Stable Diffusion maker's Series B funding brings major entertainment and gaming players into its cap table, signaling industry moves toward embedding generative tools into creative workflows.
TechCrunch — AI
Stability AI, the company behind the widely-used Stable Diffusion image model, has closed a $76 million Series B funding round, bringing its total capital raised to $232 million.
The backing consortium is striking for its composition. Rather than a typical venture investment, the round draws from the entertainment world itself—Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, and gaming publisher Electronic Arts all participated, alongside venture firms AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures.
Strategic Partnerships Over Pure Capital#
The funding lineup reflects a broader shift in how Stability operates. These aren't simply investors betting on the company's upside; they are content partners now embedded in its strategic direction. Each of the music labels has already inked deals with Stability to co-develop AI music-creation tools rather than merely license outputs, a collaboration model that deepens their stakes in the platform's success.
CEO Prem Akkaraju, who joined in 2024, framed the raise as validation of the company's direction: embedding generative AI into the hands of creators. Stability plans to deploy the fresh capital toward expanding its creative production software suite and scaling professional services.
Building Out the Creative Suite#
Stability's product portfolio spans music, video, and image generation—a broad enough range to touch multiple entertainment verticals. The company has spent the past year methodically cementing relationships with major players, clinching partnerships with Universal, EA, and Warner Music between October 2024 and November 2024, each positioning those companies as co-architects of Stability's tools.
Legal Tailwinds#
The company has enjoyed mostly favorable court outcomes on intellectual property fronts. A UK judge ruled largely in Stability's favor in a copyright case brought by Getty Images, which had claimed the company misused Getty's images during model training. A parallel Getty lawsuit in U.S. courts remains active, however. Additionally, Stability faced an internal dispute when co-founder Cyrus Hodes sued in 2023 alleging he was manipulated into selling his stake by co-founder Emad Mostaque.
