AWS Opens Virtual Desktops for AI Agents to Automate Legacy Business Apps
Amazon WorkSpaces for Agents lets autonomous systems interact directly with desktop applications without rebuilding existing tools.
The New Stack
Amazon Web Services has moved Amazon WorkSpaces for Agents out of preview and into general availability, opening a new channel for autonomous systems to operate within enterprise environments. The offering provides dedicated virtual desktop environments where agents can access and control the same applications that human workers use—without requiring companies to rewrite legacy systems or build custom bridges.
How Agents Access Business Apps#
The key appeal of this approach is simplicity: rather than constructing integrations between an agent and each backend system, enterprises can now provision AI systems to sit at the desktop itself and interact with applications through their native user interfaces. Dutch compliance software firm Wolters Kluwer, a reference customer for the launch, emphasized that agents can now "access and operate the same business applications our people use, without us having to rebuild anything."
WorkSpaces for Agents connect to instances via the Model Context Protocol (MCP), allowing agents to stream their desktop sessions and take action on applications and files as needed. Authentication and permissions flow through AWS Identity and Access Management, with Amazon CloudWatch and AWS CloudTrail providing visibility and audit trails.
Hybrid Execution: APIs and Vision Combined#
AWS positions MCP and visual task execution as complementary rather than competing strategies. When setting up a WorkSpace, administrators can install a filesystem MCP server, enabling agents to read and write files through direct tool calls rather than relying solely on screenshot analysis and response loops.
According to the company's framing, the optimal design routes each subtask to whichever interface works fastest—MCP calls when available, visual interaction only when no API exists or when GUI manipulation itself is the goal. This hybrid approach reduces the number of visual steps agents must cycle through, trimming both failure rates and overall execution time.
Human Override and Enterprise Identity#
The general availability milestone also introduces real-time human oversight capabilities. If an agent behaves unexpectedly, operators can intervene with a stop button without terminating the entire session. As workflows mature from development to production, teams can dial human supervision up or down based on task criticality.
