Joshua Achiam, who has served as chief futurist at OpenAI, informed colleagues on Tuesday that he will be leaving the organization later this month, concluding a tenure that spans nearly nine years at the AI research company.
Why He's Stepping Down#
Achiam described his decision as something he has contemplated over time rather than a response to any particular triggering event. In a message to staff, he emphasized that the expanding visibility of AI development creates new opportunities for influence beyond institutional walls. He stated that he intends to continue pursuing the broader goal of ensuring advanced artificial intelligence serves humanity's collective benefit, whether from within or outside the company.
His Role at OpenAI#
Achiam's position as chief futurist placed him at a critical juncture between OpenAI's artificial intelligence research and government relations functions. Throughout 2024, he led OpenAI's "mission alignment team," which was designed to keep the organization anchored to its founding objective of developing AI safely for everyone's advantage. The company later disbanded that group and created his new futurist title. Collaborating closely with figures like Global Affairs Chief Chris Lehane, he worked to shape regulatory frameworks that aligned with OpenAI's policy objectives.
A Pattern of Safety-Minded Departures#
Achiam's exit joins a succession of high-profile departures among OpenAI's safety and research leadership. Other notable recent exits include Jan Leike, who left to join competitor Anthropic, along with policy researchers Miles Brundage and Steven Adler, who departed to establish nonprofits dedicated to advancing AI safety standards. Andrea Vallone, who focused on responsible AI responses in sensitive situations, also transitioned to Anthropic in late 2025.
The company named former White House AI adviser Dean Ball as its new head of strategic futures, and he has begun this week with a brief overlap with Achiam's tenure.
Background and Legacy#
After starting at OpenAI as an intern in 2017, Achiam advanced to research scientist specializing in AI safety considerations. He earned recognition within the organization as a principled advocate for safety-focused development, though he generated controversy at times through his critiques of the broader AI safety field. A notable moment came when he testified in federal court about confronting Elon Musk during the billionaire's departure from OpenAI in 2018, challenging Musk's plans to pursue AGI development without adequate safety measures. The incident became legendary within the company—colleagues later gifted Achiam a golden donkey statue commemorating the exchange.
