AMD commits $5 billion to boost Anthropic's AI computing capacity
The chipmaker will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of its latest AI processors to power Claude's training and inference operations.
The Verge
AMD is investing up to $5 billion in Anthropic and will supply the AI company with massive computational resources to accelerate Claude's development. Under the partnership, Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD's Instinct MI450 AI GPUs integrated into the chipmaker's Helios rack-scale system.
Deployment Timeline and Scale#
The first gigawatt of AMD hardware is scheduled to become operational during the first half of 2027. This partnership joins a growing roster of infrastructure agreements Anthropic has secured to meet its surging computational demands, including recent deals with SpaceX and TeraWulf. The company has previously signed arrangements with Google, Broadcom, and Amazon, with speculation that Meta could become another computing partner.
Engineering Collaboration#
Beyond the hardware provision, AMD and Anthropic will establish a multi-year technical alliance in which AMD will integrate Claude into its own software development, engineering, and product workflows. According to Tom Brown, Anthropic's cofounder and chief compute officer, "By partnering with AMD across the stack, we are securing the capacity we need and optimizing it for training and serving Claude."
