OpenAI shelves standalone Atlas browser, redirects AI web tools into ChatGPT and Chrome
After a few months of testing, OpenAI concluded that a dedicated AI browser wasn't the right approach, so it's weaving agentic web capabilities into its existing apps instead.

OpenAI has decided to wind down Atlas, its dedicated AI-powered browser launched last October, signaling a shift in how the company sees the future of web interaction. Rather than doubling down on a standalone product, OpenAI is taking the intelligent browsing features it developed for Atlas and embedding them into ChatGPT's desktop application and a new Chrome extension.
Strategic pivot away from standalone browsers#
The decision reflects a broader rethinking across the AI industry about where browsers fit in the broader product ecosystem. For months, companies including Perplexity, The Browser Company, and others have competed aggressively to build standalone AI-driven browsers as alternatives to Chrome. OpenAI's conclusion—that a browser is better treated as a feature layer rather than a destination—marks a departure from that trend.
This move aligns with CEO of applications Fidji Simo's earlier directive to the company to eliminate "side quests," a strategic narrowing that also led OpenAI to shut down Sora, its video generation tool, earlier this year.
New Chrome extension and desktop capabilities#
OpenAI is launching a ChatGPT extension for Chrome that lets users tap into web context without switching applications. Users can ask questions about page content, generate summaries, and initiate longer workflows—all from within the browser. This puts OpenAI in direct competition with Google's Gemini Side Panel, which offers similar functionality.
The desktop version of ChatGPT is being enhanced with a more powerful built-in browser, enabling users to visit websites, authenticate accounts, retrieve files, and manipulate web pages directly within the application. Additionally, OpenAI is maintaining a remote cloud browser running on its own infrastructure, giving AI agents the ability to perform actions on users' behalf in a server-side environment.
Integrated workspace strategy#
Together, these changes position ChatGPT as a unified workspace that knits together the Chrome extension, the desktop application, and autonomous agent capabilities. Rather than pulling users into a new browser, OpenAI is extending ChatGPT's reach into the places where people already spend their time online.
