Shivon Zilis announces breakup with Elon Musk via X after he unfollows her
The mother of four of Musk's children revealed their split on social media, continuing a pattern of public relationship drama involving the entrepreneur.
The Verge
Shivon Zilis disclosed her separation from Elon Musk through a post on X, marking another instance of the tech entrepreneur's romantic entanglements becoming fodder for public discourse. She responded to a post from an account tracking social media behavior, noting that Musk had ceased following her on the platform.
The Announcement#
Zilis quoted a post from "Big Tech Alert," an account that monitors follower dynamics among high-profile figures, to make her announcement. In her statement, she wrote: "It's hard to go from in love to let go in a week with no warning, but that's just how it is sometimes."
Her breakup message struck a notably reverential tone, emphasizing her desire to provide emotional stability to Musk. She wrote that she felt "happy that I got to show Elon how it feels to be deeply understood, nurtured, and peacefully loved with stability and gentleness." She added, "I've loved him more than life itself and he's taught me 100 lifetimes of knowledge and made my cup overflow with life meaning, so there is a lot of loss, but luckily we created four beautiful little loves of my life."
Their Working and Personal History#
Zilis maintained a complex professional role in Musk's enterprises while bearing four of his children. During testimony in Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman earlier this year, she acknowledged working across "Musk's entire AI portfolio: Tesla, Neuralink, and OpenAI," claiming 80 to 100 hour work weeks spent identifying and resolving operational bottlenecks. When questioned about her formal title, she denied being his chief of staff, though Musk testified she held that exact position.
The couple kept the existence of their twins secret while Zilis served on OpenAI's board. Only in 2022, following a Business Insider report based on court filings, did she reveal to colleagues that she had children with one of their competitors. She and Musk shared a residence at the time of her courtroom appearance.
A Pattern with Multiple Mothers of His Children#
This breakup reflects a broader pattern in Musk's personal life. The entrepreneur's relationships with women who have borne his children have frequently ended in acrimony and public disputes. His first wife, Justine, published an essay titled "" about their split, while and is now suing over deepfake content created by his AI chatbot Grok.
