Disney Hires Character.AI's Former CEO as Its First Chief Technology Officer
The entertainment giant names Karandeep Anand as CTO, signaling a shift in how it plans to approach AI development.

Disney has filled a notable gap in its executive structure by announcing its first-ever chief technology officer. The company has brought on Karandeep Anand, who until recently led the AI chatbot platform Character.AI, to oversee its technology infrastructure and strategy.
A significant hire in the AI space#
Anand will assume the role reporting directly to Disney's CEO Josh D'Amaro and will take charge of the company's infrastructure, product engineering, and data and AI teams. Prior to joining Disney, Anand spent just over a year as the head of Character.AI, where he guided the company's expansion into new content formats, including its push into microdrama content.
Past tensions with Character.AI#
The move marks an intriguing turn given Disney's contentious history with the startup. About a year ago, Disney issued cease-and-desist notices to Character.AI, claiming that the platform's tools were being used in ways that violated the entertainment giant's intellectual property rights. That friction now appears to be water under the bridge as the two organizations forge a new relationship.
Reshaping Disney's AI strategy#
The hiring may also reflect Disney's changing approach to artificial intelligence development. The company's previous partnership with OpenAI has dissolved, leaving the door open for Disney to chart its own course in the AI landscape. Bringing on an executive with hands-on experience building AI platforms suggests the company intends to develop these capabilities more directly rather than rely solely on external partnerships.
