Amazon Lands Emmys in $120M Six-Year Streaming Deal Starting 2027
The awards ceremony will move to Prime Video from traditional broadcast television, with free global access beginning in 2027.

Amazon has secured exclusive rights to stream the Primetime Emmy Awards for the next six years in a landmark deal that reshapes the broadcast landscape of televised awards shows. The ceremony will transition from its longtime home on traditional broadcast networks to Prime Video, beginning with the 2027 ceremony in September, and the Television Academy confirmed the partnership.
The most striking aspect of the agreement is its cost and access model. According to reporting on the financial terms, Amazon is investing approximately $20–25 million annually in the rights, totaling roughly $120 million across the entire contract period. Perhaps more notably, the Emmy broadcast will remain free to watch for viewers worldwide—no Prime Video subscription required.
The Shift in Streaming Strategy#
This deal reflects a broader pivot by streaming platforms to acquire marquee live events and award shows. The major streaming services are increasingly competing for cultural moments that can drive engagement and prestige. Netflix recently secured rights to the Screen Actors Guild Awards, while YouTube will host the Oscars starting in 2029.
Cris Abrego, chair of the Television Academy, described the partnership as an opportunity to build on decades of broadcast heritage. "Having a dedicated home with Prime Video allows us to build on that legacy with unprecedented global reach and a broader commitment to the Television Academy and our mission throughout the year," he said.
Streaming's Growing Dominance#
The Emmys themselves have already become a showcase for streaming excellence. At the most recent ceremony, Apple TV+ led all networks in awards won, with shows including Widow's Bay claiming 14 honors. The shift to Prime Video underscores how streaming platforms have moved from the margins of television to commanding the center stage of the industry's biggest celebration.
