OpenAI prepares to enter crowded AI agent market with Aeon at DevDay 2026
OpenAI is expected to unveil its own continuously running consumer AI agent at its upcoming event, aiming to catch up with rivals like Meta's Muse and Google's Gemini Spark.

OpenAI helped spark the modern generative AI era with ChatGPT, but the company appears to be playing catch-up in one of the industry's hottest segments: autonomous AI agents that run around the clock and handle real-world tasks for consumers. At its 2026 DevDay event on Tuesday, the company is expected to unveil a contender rumored to be called Aeon—a bid to regain ground against Meta's Muse, Google's Gemini Spark, and other platforms now dominating the category.
The competition accelerates#
The race to deliver practical AI agents has heated up dramatically over the past year. These platforms can handle everything from booking travel and scheduling doctor appointments to managing bills, canceling subscriptions, and organizing group outings. What once seemed like a distant dream for the industry has become a working reality for competitors.
Meta's Muse, released earlier this month, has already topped app store charts and attracted 600,000 daily active users in the US. Google's Gemini Spark boasts connections to over 30 external services including Dropbox, Uber, and Spotify. Instinct has gained attention for its simplicity, allowing users to interact via iMessage and other messaging apps. Meanwhile, the open-source OpenClaw proved the viability of autonomous agents and has drawn millions of users since its release last year.
By contrast, OpenAI's visible progress on agent technology has stalled. The company previewed an agentic API feature in 2024 and released early consumer-facing agents focused on computer use in 2025, but has since ceded much of the momentum to competitors.
What Aeon might deliver#
Details about Aeon remain sparse, though one significant detail stands out: OpenAI recently hired Peter Steinberger, the creator of OpenClaw, suggesting the company intends to incorporate proven agent design principles into its offering.
Aeon could draw strength from OpenAI's latest frontier model, GPT-6 Astra, which the company positions as a leap toward artificial general intelligence. This foundation should theoretically give any OpenAI agent an edge in cybersecurity, software engineering, research, and general computer use tasks.
However, OpenAI faces structural disadvantages. Meta's Muse benefits from deep integration with Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and other platforms used by billions globally. Google's agent hooks into Gmail, Drive, Search, and enterprise services that span millions of organizations. OpenAI lacks comparable built-in distribution channels. The company attempted to narrow this gap last year by pushing its ChatGPT Apps SDK, embedding controls for Zillow, Spotify, and Canva directly into ChatGPT—a strategy it will likely expand.
