Google DeepMind announced a sweeping set of partnerships with Indian government bodies and local institutions aimed at expanding access to frontier AI capabilities across science, education, and energy sectors.
Science and Research#
The company is collaborating with the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) to accelerate scientific breakthroughs. Indian researchers will gain access to AI tools including:
- AlphaGenome: An AI model for understanding how DNA mutations affect gene function
- AI Co-scientist: A multi-agent system that serves as a virtual research collaborator
- Earth AI: Models supporting environmental monitoring and disaster response
India already ranks as the fourth largest global adopter of AlphaFold, with over 180,000 researchers using the protein structure prediction system. Google.org is also launching a $30 million Impact Challenge: AI for Science offering funding and accelerator support for researchers and nonprofits worldwide using AI for scientific discovery.
Education and Workforce Development#
Google DeepMind is expanding AI literacy efforts across Indian schools. India now leads globally in daily Gemini usage by students, and early research shows that students use AI to deepen understanding rather than seek shortcuts.
Key initiatives include:
- Innovation hubs with Atal Tinkering Labs: Integrating robotics, coding, and Gemini into curricula across 10,000 schools serving 11 million students
- Interactive digital textbooks: Partnering with PM Publishers to transform two million static textbooks into AI-powered learning tools across 2,000 schools
- Linguistic diversity: A $2 million contribution to establish an Indic Language Technologies Research Hub at IIT Bombay, ensuring AI reflects India's linguistic landscape
The Experience AI program, developed with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, has already reached 300,000 students and 8,000 teachers in India.
Agriculture and Renewable Energy#
Google is supporting Indian startups and organizations applying freely available Agri AI models to improve crop productivity and farmer incomes. The company is also collaborating with Open Climate Fix to integrate its WeatherNext AI into India's electricity grid operations—testing showed up to 8% improvement in wind generation forecast accuracy.
