Apple Intelligence for HomeKit cameras carries hefty price tag of up to $60 monthly
New AI-powered security features for HomeKit roll out with iOS 27, but additional subscription costs scale steeply with camera count.
The Verge
Apple's latest operating system updates bring artificial intelligence capabilities to HomeKit security cameras, enabling automated video analysis and intelligent clip generation—but the new functionality arrives bundled with a steep pricing structure that could push monthly costs well beyond what competing services charge.
What's changing#
The new Apple Intelligence features for HomeKit Secure Video leverage AI to generate text summaries of video footage, showing users what cameras detected and why. The system also introduces a video search tool and the ability to combine footage from multiple cameras into a single continuous clip, reducing the need to manually sift through individual recordings. Apple notes that footage captured by HomeKit cameras does not consume iCloud storage space.
The pricing puzzle#
Access to these AI enhancements requires stepping up to higher-tier iCloud Plus subscriptions. A single camera gains Apple Intelligence through the 2TB iCloud Plus plan at $9.99 monthly (or $39.95 as part of an Apple One Premier bundle). Adding a second camera necessitates upgrading to the 6TB tier at $29.99 per month. Supporting up to five cameras jumps to $59.99 monthly for the 12TB plan. Apple has not clarified whether users can add cameras beyond this five-camera threshold.
For context, HomeKit Secure Video has historically been bundled with basic iCloud Plus tiers starting at just $1 a month for single-camera support, with options scaling up for multiple devices without the AI premium. The new pricing represents a significant departure.
How it compares#
Rivals Amazon Ring and Google Nest offer equivalent AI-powered video description and analysis features through subscription tiers priced around $20 monthly. Both platforms provide additional capabilities beyond what Apple currently delivers. While iCloud Plus does cover photo storage, file syncing, and device backups across its tiers—benefits that extend beyond HomeKit—Apple has yet to specify how higher plans interact with other AI features or storage quotas for its broader intelligence suite.
The verdict#
The underlying technical improvements—including 4K video support and performance enhancements—arrive for free as part of the iOS 27 and tvOS 27 updates, meaning existing HomeKit Secure Video subscribers see no degradation in service. The new features themselves deliver tangible utility. However, the subscription economics create a significant barrier: a customer already paying $40 monthly for Apple One Premier would face an additional $60 per month to enable AI analysis across their five-camera setup—effectively doubling annual costs to $1,200. At that price point, the value proposition struggles against simpler, cheaper alternatives from established smart home competitors.
