Microsoft secures exclusive cloud streaming rights for GTA 6
Xbox Cloud Gaming will be the only platform offering Grand Theft Auto VI streaming at launch, a major win as Microsoft expands its game-streaming offerings.
The Verge
Microsoft has locked in exclusive cloud streaming rights for Grand Theft Auto VI, giving Xbox Cloud Gaming sole access to stream Rockstar's sprawling open-world title when it launches. The announcement came during an employee meeting where Xbox CEO Asha Sharma highlighted the deal as something "no other platform holder is doing."
The streaming advantage#
The exclusivity agreement means only Xbox Cloud Gaming can deliver GTA 6 to players on day one, though the duration of the exclusive window remains unclear. This is particularly significant for PC players, since Rockstar Games has yet to announce a personal computer release for the game. For those without a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S, cloud streaming will be the only accessible route.
Timing with service changes#
The streaming rights arrival in November coincides with major restructuring of Xbox Cloud Gaming. Starting that month, Microsoft is revamping its subscription model while also launching a new pay-as-you-go tier. Existing Game Pass Ultimate members will see their monthly streaming hours capped at 15 hours, though those willing to pay hourly rates can bypass subscription limits entirely—creating a natural on-ramp for GTA 6 players who want flexible, short-term access.
Broader Xbox strategy#
Sharma also used the all-hands meeting to reinforce Microsoft's vision for next-generation consoles. Project Helix, the upcoming family of Xbox devices, will involve partnerships with external manufacturers rather than relying solely on first-party hardware. This modular approach follows Microsoft and AMD's announced multi-year collaboration on a portfolio of gaming devices.
