Roblox brings AI-powered mobile game builder to challenge developer gatekeeping
The platform's new "Build" feature lets anyone create games from text prompts on mobile, but raises concerns about quality and market saturation among creators.
TechCrunch — AI
Roblox has unveiled a mobile game-creation tool that harnesses AI to transform text descriptions into playable games, bypassing the need for coding skills or game development experience.
The new Build feature#
The company's latest offering, called Build, enables users to describe a game concept in plain language and watch the system generate a functional prototype. A user might type "cozy adventure game in a dense forest," and the tool produces an initial version that can be refined and shared. The feature relies on a mix of open-source and custom-trained AI models to handle gameplay systems, environments, characters, aesthetics, and audio production.
The rollout begins with a limited public alpha on July 28, initially restricted to users aged nine and up in New Zealand (those 16+ can publish globally). A free tier will be available alongside premium options.
Addressing the quality concern#
The broader rollout of AI game generation has prompted industry skepticism. A recent Game Developer Conference survey found that 52% of game professionals view generative AI negatively, citing worries that effortless creation could flood platforms with derivative or unplayable content and disadvantage human creators facing rapid AI competition.
Roblox counters that its discovery algorithms prioritize games with sustained player engagement. According to the company, "If no one plays it—no one can find it," meaning low-quality or repetitive AI-generated titles will receive minimal visibility rather than platform promotion.
Roblox's broader AI roadmap#
This announcement is part of a larger strategy. The company is simultaneously developing AI agents to help creators test games and analyze player behavior, due in coming months. Earlier initiatives include a 3D asset generation foundation model (in open beta since early 2026), an AI coding assistant for developers, and a scene-generation model capable of building full 3D environments from a single text prompt.
The move aligns Roblox with competitors like Google, Microsoft, and Tencent, each developing generative game tools. The timing also follows the platform's decision to sunset , its avatar-based video calling feature introduced in 2023.
