New study reveals how developers experience vibe coding with AI assistants
Researchers conducted the first systematic qualitative investigation into how developers perceive and use vibe coding, finding that trust in AI is key to maintaining flow and creative collaboration.
Vibe coding—a conversational approach to software development that prioritizes experimentation and iterative refinement with an AI partner—is the subject of a newly published qualitative study that captures how developers actually experience this emerging paradigm.
What the research examined#
Researchers conducted the first systematic investigation into vibe coding practices by analyzing over 190,000 words drawn from developer interviews, Reddit discussions, and LinkedIn conversations. The study documents what vibe coding is in practice, why developers are adopting it, how it works on the ground, where it encounters friction, and what strategies are emerging to support it.
Key findings on developer experience#
The research proposes that vibe coding fundamentally centers on three elements: back-and-forth dialogue with AI, shared creation between human and machine, and the ability to sustain developer flow and enjoyment. A critical insight is that developers' confidence in the AI assistant acts as a regulator—it determines how much a developer is willing to delegate tasks versus actively co-create with the AI, and it directly shapes whether they can maintain the satisfying sense of momentum that makes the approach appealing.
Where vibe coding struggles#
Despite its promise, the study surfaces persistent challenges: defining requirements clearly, ensuring code reliability, debugging complex issues, managing response latency, handling the overhead of code review, and coordinating across teams. These pain points suggest that vibe coding is not a complete replacement for traditional development practices but rather one tool within a larger workflow.
Emerging best practices#
The research also catalogs practical strategies that developers and tool makers have discovered to address these challenges, providing a foundation for improving AI-assisted development tools and guiding future research into how developers and AI can work most effectively together.
The study was published on arXiv.
