Researchers introduce benchmark to test AI coding agents on payment integration tasks
A new evaluation framework measures how well large language models can build real-world payment system integrations, the kind of complex software work that requires careful coordination between client and server components.
Researchers have created a specialized testing framework called Alipay-PIBench to evaluate how well AI coding agents can handle realistic payment integration work. The benchmark reflects the real-world complexity of building payment systems, where agents must choose appropriate technical approaches, coordinate interconnected components, confirm that transactions complete correctly, and maintain consistency across different parts of the software.
The Benchmark's Design#
Alipay-PIBench consists of nine separate projects with 18 distinct task instances, each broken into two difficulty levels. Basic scenarios focus on core functionality, while Advanced scenarios layer on additional requirements around risk management and security hardening. The framework uses both automated checks—examining code structure, running unit tests, and validating end-to-end transaction flows—and human-assisted assessments to evaluate whether solutions meet semantic requirements beyond just technical correctness.
Coding Agent Performance#
The researchers tested six different AI coding models on the benchmark. When the agents had access to specialized payment integration skills, their mean rubric pass rate (the percentage of evaluation criteria met) ranged from 68.58% to 91.37%. Access to targeted payment integration guidance improved performance by an average of 10.31 percentage points, though the gains varied depending on the specific model, product type, and task difficulty level.
Real-World Relevance#
Payment integration exemplifies the kind of repository-level software engineering challenge that demands more than simple code completion. These tasks require understanding how different system components interact, managing error states, and preserving data consistency across transaction states—skills that distinguish advanced AI coding capabilities from basic text generation.
