OpenAI Expands Codex with Persistent Cloud Workspaces and Enhanced Developer Tools
At its Dev Day, OpenAI unveiled upgrades to Codex that let software engineering teams share persistent cloud development environments and access them from any device.
TechCrunch — AI
OpenAI has rolled out a significant update to Codex, its AI-powered software engineering agent, designed to make collaborative development more seamless by introducing persistent, reusable cloud environments that developers can access across laptops, phones, and cloud platforms.
Announced during OpenAI's Dev Day this week, the expansion reflects a shift toward treating cloud-hosted work as a continuous, shared workspace rather than isolated, temporary sandboxes. The suite of improvements touches nearly every stage of the development lifecycle—from task execution to security scanning.
Shared Workspaces and Cross-Device Access#
The centerpiece of this release is the ability to set up durable development environments in the cloud that teams can configure with standardized settings and permissions. This allows multiple developers to access the same workspace and reduces setup overhead; tasks can now launch more quickly since the infrastructure persists between sessions. Codex can be invoked from a computer, remotely via smartphone, or directly from a cloud instance, offering unprecedented flexibility for distributed teams.
Enhanced Developer Workflow#
The refreshed Codex CLI introduces several usability improvements. Developers can now start and oversee tasks using voice commands, simplifying hands-free operation. A new /agents view streamlines delegation and multi-task tracking, while quality-of-life upgrades—including faster prompt editing, session resumption, and worktree support—reduce friction in daily operations. OpenAI has also redesigned the terminal interface to keep longer sessions readable and manageable.
Code Review Integration#
Codex gains a new code review feature within ChatGPT's desktop application, where developers can view change summaries, inspect modifications, and query the agent about potential issues before pushing pull requests to GitHub or GitLab. The system can also perform unattended initial reviews, scanning and commenting on code changes while the developer is offline.
Security and Infrastructure Hardening#
OpenAI is introducing Codex Security Cloud, a toolset for infrastructure security that scans GitHub repositories on demand or on a schedule, and automatically reexamines the codebase whenever new commits arrive. The system investigates findings, filters out redundant issues, and generates fixes—all in the background, even when the user is away. Developers gain direct access to models from OpenAI's cybersecurity initiative without needing a separate application process.
