OpenAI's Executive Exodus Signals Leadership Overhaul as IPO Looms
Senior departures including the COO and top deputies point to a major restructuring under president Greg Brockman as the AI lab prepares for its public market debut.

OpenAI has achieved remarkable market momentum—its latest GPT-5.6 model ranks among the most advanced available, and its desktop app has added roughly 15 million users in two months. Yet the company faces an unusual paradox: even as it files for an IPO and strengthens its competitive position, a wave of senior executives are departing.
The Departures Mount#
Since January 2026, OpenAI has lost more than a dozen top leaders. Among them are Sam Altman's second-in-command, the chief operating officer, the chief revenue officer, the chief marketing officer, and several key project leaders. Most recently, Chris Malone—who oversaw the company's data center operations—exited after less than two years in the role. These exits have been attributed to a combination of health concerns and organizational restructuring aimed at cutting low-priority initiatives and concentrating resources on revenue-driving products.
The Data Center Loss Stings#
Malone's departure is particularly noteworthy given OpenAI's reliance on computing infrastructure as a fundamental competitive advantage against rivals like Anthropic. OpenAI attributed his exit to an infrastructure team reorganization under vice president Sachin Katti, who now reports to president Greg Brockman. The shift effectively placed Malone several levels further from the top—a structural demotion that may have prompted his decision to leave.
Brockman's Rising Influence#
The infrastructure and product organizations now both report directly to Brockman, signaling a significant recentralization of power. As cofounder and president, Brockman had been sidelined from day-to-day management since 2019 when Altman took the CEO role. He returned to the company in 2024 after a sabbatical, and now appears poised for expanded operational control. According to one senior product leader, Brockman's reach has become pervasive: "I like to say that everyone reports to Greg at the end of the day," Thibault Sottiaux, head of product, told TechCrunch last week.
