Developer releases command-line fix to disable Apple Intelligence on macOS 27
With macOS 27 Golden Gate lacking an easy on-off switch for AI features, a new tool lets users quickly remove Apple Intelligence and reclaim significant storage space.
Ars Technica
Mac users frustrated by Apple Intelligence taking up valuable disk space now have a workaround. Because macOS 27 Golden Gate eliminated the straightforward toggle for disabling AI capabilities—a feature available in earlier versions—unwanted AI models persist on drives whether users actually engage with them or not.
A solution emerges#
Developer Om Lahore created RemoveMacAI, a command-line utility designed to address this gap. The tool performs a comprehensive cleanup by deactivating Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, the ChatGPT integration, and summary features, then removes the underlying models and prevents the system from reinstalling them automatically. Notably, Dictation continues to function since it operates through a separate mechanism.
Storage gains#
The removal process frees up considerable space. While Apple's documentation mentions the models consume roughly 12GB, The Verge reported that actual disk footprint can exceed 30GB. The developer emphasized that the action is fully reversible, allowing users to restore Apple Intelligence if they change their minds.
The tool's emergence highlights a tension in Apple's current approach: integrating AI deeply into the operating system while removing granular user controls over whether that functionality stays installed.
