Spotify Labels AI-Generated Artists, Removes Them From Algorithmic Feeds
The streaming platform will badge profiles of artificial musicians and exclude their tracks from recommendations unless users explicitly follow them.
TechCrunch — AI
Spotify announced plans to introduce "AI Persona" badges on artist profiles representing non-human identities and exclude their music from the platform's recommendation systems by default. The initiative reflects the service's effort to prioritize authentic artists while acknowledging the growing presence of AI-generated content.
How the System Works#
Starting next month, Spotify users will encounter badges identifying artists whose profiles represent artificially generated personas rather than real people. These labels will appear across multiple locations — in the artist's banner, About section, search results, and alongside tracks in playlists.
The company will identify AI Persona profiles through two approaches: artists may voluntarily disclose their AI-generated status through Spotify for Artists starting August 11, 2026, or Spotify's own review process will flag profiles where the artist name and imagery indicate photorealistic AI identities. The platform plans to prioritize its review of higher-profile artists based on listener thresholds.
Algorithmic and Editorial Restrictions#
Once flagged, music from AI Personas will be excluded from Spotify's editorial selections and algorithmic recommendations, as well as from personalized discovery features. This restriction does not apply to users who have explicitly chosen to follow an AI Persona artist — those listeners will continue receiving that artist's content in their feeds.
Spotify emphasizes that this remains an artist-profile designation, not a judgment on how the music itself was produced. Details about a track's creation method remain accessible through separate features like AI Credits and SongDNA.
Broader Context Within Spotify's AI Strategy#
The move extends Spotify's existing framework governing AI-generated content, established in September 2025. The platform currently identifies AI-produced tracks using industry-standard methods and prohibits unauthorized voice cloning and deepfakes. The company also operates its own AI tools, including Prompted Playlists, AI DJ, and a , alongside forthcoming AI remix capabilities.
