Google Opens Gemini for Home as Full-Stack Platform for Device Makers and Carriers
Service providers and hardware partners can now build AI-powered smart home services using Google's Gemini APIs and turnkey reference designs.
Google Developers Blog (AI)
Google is expanding its Gemini for Home initiative beyond its own ecosystem, opening the platform to carriers, ISPs, security companies, and hardware manufacturers to build proactive, AI-driven home services.
Three Core Capabilities#
The rollout centers on three technical pillars already deployed across Google Home:
- Camera intelligence: Gemini-powered cameras provide contextual event detection. Instead of a generic "person detected" alert, users get specific information like package deliveries or visitor identification.
- Ask Home: Users can ask natural-language questions via voice or chat—such as "Did the dog chew the shoe on the couch?"—and receive real-time, household-aware answers.
- Home Brief: The system synthesizes hours of sensor and video data into a daily summary that understands household context, like identifying family members by name.
Opportunities for Service Providers#
According to Google's announcement, carriers and ISPs can bundle these features into branded security and home management services. Benefits include daily activity summaries via Home Brief, "simulated presence" automations for vacation security, and real-time visitor and delivery alerts powered by camera intelligence.
AT&T has already integrated these APIs into its Connected Life app, combining Google's camera intelligence with LTE backup for a hybrid security solution.
Hardware Acceleration Program#
Google is expanding its Gemini Built-In Program to simplify hardware development. Rather than requiring years of R&D, the program provides validated reference designs—including processors, sensors, and microphones from partners like Amlogic, SEI Robotics, and Apical.
New for 2026, the offerings include:
- Camera reference designs for rapid deployment of Gemini-capable smart cameras
- Speaker reference designs supporting full voice experience and home command center functions
The initiative represents Google's most open approach to its Home ecosystem, giving partners access from application layer through hardware architecture.
