New Benchmark Measures How Well AI Coding Agents Follow Engineering Discipline, Not Just Results
Researchers introduce RigorBench, the first evaluation framework to assess process quality in autonomous AI agents—finding that disciplined development practices also improve code correctness.
Most tests of AI coding assistants focus on a simple question: does the code work? A team of researchers argues that answer alone misses something crucial—whether the agent got there through thoughtful engineering or lucky trial-and-error.
The new RigorBench benchmark, released as an open-source suite, introduces the first systematic way to measure process discipline in autonomous AI coding agents alongside outcome correctness.
Why Process Matters#
An AI agent can produce working code in many ways. One might plan systematically, test incrementally, and handle errors gracefully. Another might crash through dozens of failed attempts, guessing wildly until something compiles. Both might pass the same test suite, but they represent vastly different levels of reliability for real-world deployment.
The researchers argue that in production environments, how an agent codes—its planning, verification, and error recovery habits—signals its trustworthiness just as much as what it produces.
Five Pillars of Engineering Discipline#
RigorBench evaluates agents across five dimensions:
- Planning Fidelity: Does the agent sketch out an approach before diving in?
- Verification Coverage: How thoroughly does it test its own work?
- Recovery Efficiency: Can it escape dead ends without thrashing?
- Abstention Quality: Does it recognize when to stop or ask for help?
- Atomic Transition Integrity: Are code changes logically coherent and traceable?
These pillars combine into a single RigorScore metric using a weighted formula.
The Experiment#
The team tested leading coding harnesses and baseline assistants on 30 tasks across five categories: Plan-Then-Build, Verify-Or-Die, Doom Loop Gauntlet, Know When to Fold, and Don't Break the Build. The controlled setup compared performance with and without structured process discipline built in.
The Results#
Agents that adopted rigorous engineering practices improved their process quality scores by an average of 41%. More striking: this disciplined approach also raised downstream code correctness by 17%—the first quantitative evidence that engineering rigor and correct outcomes reinforce each other.
