SpaceX rents AI chips to Reflection AI for $150M monthly deal through 2029
Open-source AI startup Reflection secured compute access worth up to $6.3 billion from SpaceX's Memphis data center, joining Anthropic and Google as major customers.
TechCrunch — AI
SpaceX is expanding its compute rental business beyond closed-model AI labs, now working with Reflection AI, an open-source AI startup. Under a new multi-year agreement, Reflection will pay $150 million monthly starting July 1, 2026 through 2029 for access to Nvidia GB300 AI chips at SpaceX's Colossus 2 data center near Memphis, Tennessee—a contract potentially worth $6.3 billion.
The Deal#
The arrangement is notably smaller than SpaceX's earlier commitments with Anthropic ($1.25 billion/month) and Google ($920 million/month), though all three contracts run on similar timelines through mid-2029. Like those agreements, either party can terminate with 90 days' notice after the initial three-month period.
Open-Source Positioning#
Reflection, founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers, is leveraging the deal to highlight its open-weight model strategy—releasing trained AI parameters publicly rather than keeping them proprietary. The company framed the compute commitment as validation of this approach, particularly following recent U.S. government restrictions on Anthropic's closed models.
The Colossus facility, originally developed by xAI (Elon Musk's AI venture, now absorbed into SpaceX), has become a key revenue stream as SpaceX monetizes its substantial GPU inventory while xAI's internal progress has slowed.
