Google Releases Component-Level Security Verification for Android Apps
New AndroidX Security State libraries let developers check patch status for individual device components instead of relying on a single system-wide security date.
InfoQ
Google has introduced a pair of AndroidX libraries that fundamentally change how Android app developers assess device security. Rather than checking against a single, device-wide patch number, apps can now examine the security status of individual system components—opening up more nuanced and responsive security decisions.
Moving Beyond Monolithic Patch Dates#
Traditionally, Android has relied on the Security Patch Level (SPL), a single metric covering the entire software stack. The new libraries retire this one-size-fits-all approach in favor of granular visibility. Developers now access three distinct patch levels for each component: the patch currently installed on the device, the latest one officially published by Google, and the one available for download on that specific hardware configuration.
Component-Level Granularity#
The Security State library breaks down device security into three tiers: the core Android OS itself, modular OS subsystems shipped via Google Play, and the kernel. This split matters because updates can roll out at different speeds to different parts of the system. A device might be fully patched for the core OS but lag on a Play-distributed subsystem—or vice versa. The new libraries surface exactly where gaps exist.
Practical Applications for Security-Critical Apps#
Banking, fintech, and healthcare apps can leverage this transparency to enforce smarter security gates. Instead of blocking a user outright, an app can identify which specific component is lagging and prompt installation of that update. Enterprise MDM solutions and developers handling sensitive operations similarly benefit from the ability to check patch status for particular CVEs before allowing access to certain hardware features—such as NFC or Bluetooth.
Key Functions#
The library exposes several programmatic tools:
queryAllAvailableUpdates()— scans for pending security updates across all system componentsfetchAvailableSecurityPatchLevel()— retrieves available patch data for a specific component
