Apple is expected to announce its first dedicated smart home hub on October 13th, marking the company's formal entry into the home automation category. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman revealed that the device will arrive as part of a trio of announcements also including refreshed versions of the HomePod mini speaker and the Apple TV streaming device.
Hardware Design and Form Factor#
The device will feature a 6-inch display housed in a chassis described as roughly the thickness of an iPhone, with bezels reminiscent of older iPad models. Apple's design approach draws inspiration from the iMac G4, incorporating a round metal base that contains integrated speakers and microphones, paired with a metal arm supporting the screen. This stand design permits the display to tilt for optimal viewing angles.
The company plans to offer two configuration options: a tabletop model with the integrated base, and a wall-mounted variant featuring a slimmer base profile. The hub will operate via USB-C power, as it contains no onboard battery. The device will be available in Apple's signature gray aluminum finish.
Software and Features#
All three announced products will run Siri AI, Apple's redesigned artificial intelligence assistant. The hub's operating system appears to draw heavily from iPad-like applications and interfaces, with the Messages app reportedly employing a two-panel layout typical of tablet software.
The hub is expected to serve as a control center for smart home devices, handle video calling, stream music and photo slideshows, and support intercom functionality. The system will incorporate voice and facial recognition capabilities to identify household members and personalize interactions accordingly.
