Meta Opens Muse AI Agent to DIY Hardware Builders
The company released open-source tools that let developers create custom gadgets powered by its Muse personal assistant.
TechCrunch — AI
Meta is extending its Muse personal AI agent beyond software by inviting builders and hobbyists to create custom hardware that taps into the platform. The move signals the company's ambition to embed Muse across diverse devices and use cases, not just as a standalone chatbot.
The Open-Source Play#
Meta unveiled Muse Gadgets, an open-source framework that provides firmware and developer tools for creating Muse-connected hardware. The platform supplies builders with code templates, a Linux software development kit, and sample project concepts to kickstart development. The company is positioning the effort as deliberately permissive—developers can wire Muse into budget-friendly platforms like Raspberry Pi or ESP32 boards, then integrate it with whatever hardware components they have on hand: displays, buttons, sensors, and actuators.
To help the community get traction, Meta has established a dedicated Discord channel for users to share ideas and troubleshoot.
A Concrete Reference Design#
Meta has already put the framework to work, building what it calls Muse Home Link—a USB-C device that functions as a hub between Muse and a household's connected ecosystem. The hardware lets Muse interact with smart speakers, televisions, and other networked devices throughout the home.
The company manufactured 5,000 units and is distributing them free to existing Muse subscribers while inventory holds out. According to Nat Friedman, head of product at Meta's Superintelligence Labs, the response has been swift; his announcement post garnered approximately 30,000 views in hours. Shipments were expected to begin within weeks of the announcement.
Broadening Muse Beyond Consumers#
The gadget initiative aligns with Meta's larger strategy to position Muse as more than consumer software. The company has recently moved to capture small businesses and enterprises through new offerings like Muse for Small Business, which provides free access with usage caps and integrates with tools such as Shopify, Dropbox, and Slack. Meta also launched a dedicated Meta Enterprise Platform unit to accelerate business adoption.
Muse itself has gained considerable traction—the personal agent, which automates travel bookings, form completion, and online shopping, has already demonstrated strong early momentum relative to other mobile AI assistants.
